September 2004 Security Update for JPEG Processing (GDI+)

Published: September 14, 2004 | Updated: September 29, 2004

The GDI+ security update for September 2004 addresses newly discovered issues in JPEG processing technology. This issue affects software that supports this image format, including some versions of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft developer tools. If you have any of the listed software installed on your computer, you should install the related update.

Depending on the software you are using, you may need to install multiple updates from multiple locations.

Important Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is not affected by the GDI+ issue, and installing Windows XP SP2 eliminates the GDI+ issue in affected Microsoft developer tools and imaging software. However, Windows XP SP2 users may have other Microsoft software installed that requires updating. If you use Windows XP SP2 and Microsoft Office, please visit the Office Update Web site to scan your computer for needed updates.

Step 1 (For Users of Windows XP, Windows XP SP1, or Windows Server 2003): Update Windows

The Windows Update Web site provides updates for affected versions of Windows, the .NET Framework, and Internet Explorer, a component of Windows.
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Step 2 (For Office Users): Update Office

The Office Update Web site provides updates for affected Office programs.
http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/

Step 3 (For Users of Windows Versions Other Than Windows XP or Windows Server 2003): Update Imaging Software

If you are running an earlier version of Windows and if you have certain versions of Greetings, Picture It!, or Digital Image Pro installed, you may need to install additional updates. The GDI+ Detection Tool checks your computer for affected versions, then returns a list of links to the download locations of any updates you need.

Step 4: Update Developer Tools

If you use developer tools, review the list of affected software on this page to see if any other installed programs require updating. Updates for additional software are available from the Microsoft Download Center.
