Windows Installer 3.0 is available

Microsoft Windows Installer 3.0 shipped as part of Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and is now available as a redistributable system component for Microsoft Windows 2000 SP3, Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows XP SP1, and Microsoft Windows Server 2003. The additional features help make servicing easier and more efficient. (Servicing includes authoring, creating, distributing, and managing updates to applications.) These features also address issues that exist with earlier versions of the Windows Installer.

Overview
The Microsoft® Windows® Installer is an application installation and configuration service. WindowsInstaller-KB884016-x86.exe is the redistributable package for installing or upgrading Windows Installer.

Note for users of previous versions of the Windows Installer: The new Windows Installer redistributable, WindowsInstaller-KB884016-x86.exe, follows a new naming convention that contains a knowledge base reference so it is easier to identify which version of the Windows Installer will be installed. The previous naming convention, INSTMSI.EXE, will no longer be used.

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows XP Service Pack 1
Windows Installer 3.0 Redistributable supports Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or later, Windows XP, Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2003. Windows XP Service Pack 2 contains Windows Installer 3.0 and therefore can't be installed or upgraded by this redistributable.
