Hope you can help...my problem started when my AOL failed to connect to the internet. I reinstalled the AOL s/w but it could not detect my internal modem. I tried an external modem but still no joy. Looked at event log and there were errors with the Network Connections service, it would not start and just said "Procedure not found". I tried a few things but basically resorted to using the recovery CD that came with the laptop to do a non-destructive system recovery. This sorted out the modem problem and allowed me to dial but it still would not connect. During a support call to AOL they asked me to launch hyperterminal to check the modem but it would not even start (a process did appear in the task manager though). I then went into windows explorer and it would not even show my C drive! I rebooted and still had the problem with explorer. I ran the system recovery again and it seemed ok, but I still can't connect to the internet.

Basically it all seems really weird...is my system just screwed or could this be some sort of virus?

I did a hijackthis today:

I'm guessing that even after the recovery cd there are still errors being generated ?

Yes I'm still getting weird behaviour on the machine. The hijack log was taken after a fresh Recovery.

See if system restore is still an option. If so then go back to a point beyond all of the trouble.

Thanks. I did try that before I resorted to the Recovery CD. I went back to a point way way before I noticed any problem and that didn't help

Then look in device manager for anything needing attention with a red x or a question mark next to it..

Im not familiar with installing AOL but during the installation im sure there would be a part where the aol software searches for the internal modem. If it doesn't find it on its own then you must be able to manually set it. Are you able to accomplish that ?

Yes you're absolutely right: you do get the option to manually enter the settings. I've tried this and it will let me enter the COM port the modem is installed on, but it just hangs when I try and dial. I have tried an external (PCMCIA) modem as I thought there may be a problem with the internal modem but I still have the same problem.

To test the modem I tried to set up a normal dial up connection through Network settings and that was when I noticed that the Network Connections service would not start.

Try start / run / services.msc

Then in the list scroll down to the network connections entry. ZDouble click it and make sure its both set to automatic and started. If not started then do so as well as set to automatic then retry. Also if it errors provide me with that as well.
