I would tend to think that the server software is still running then.

If either xp or 2000 go to start / run /services.msc

Scroll down to server, double click and disable then apply and stop

I have done that... But the same thing is still happening. and when I open any folder eg my documents or any other folder it says: Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly. Then I can't see anything in the folder? When opening internet browser 4 or 5 different windows open with windows xp security and privacy all with the same error?

Try resetting the options back to default in internet options via control panel

None of that worked...? Is there anything else that could be wrong? Should I try reinstalling the mssql from the internet somewhere?
