I was wondering if any of you guys could tell me how I could host my own website. I looked it up on Google, and only found information on hosting websites through their man frame. I would like too be able too host my site on my own. Is this a possibility or not? This isn't going too be a big site, but I believe there will be some huge downloads or streaming. What programs will I need too get, too start hosting a website on my computer?

Raistlfiren, First it depends on the TOS of your ISP. IF they will let you, here are some good links:
DSL/Cable Webserver - Run your own webserver from home on DSL or Cable!
Hosting from home
CubeCartForums -> Run your own server and save
And then these were helpful as well:
easyDNS.com - Domain name registration and DNS management service that gives you control over your domains.
Dynamic DNS, Static DNS for Your Dynamic IP
H-Sphere Free Trial - Positive Software Corporation

Hope this helps. Liz

Wow, shoot I forogt I even posted this topic. lol I got everything running, I installed Appserv and Cerebrus for an ftp server.... Now I am just trying to find out about the necesary secuirty steps I need to take on making things safer.

I suppose for a email server I will need to buy a domain first to start my own email server? So do you buy your own domain seperate from your email server? I was looking at having a different domain for my webserver than my email server. :/ I found my webserver up and running on my ip... Though, I suppose I need a domain for my ip though... I also suppose you have to buy a domain for your email server before you can get your own email server setup....
Thanks for your information,
Rat

Yeah freewebs is nice, but I don't want the advertisements on it... Plus I want to get the experience of making my own server....

Southernlady, what software do you use to run your server? Do you use XAMPP?

Nope they won't give any... I am trying to setup my own right now... I just wish I knew all the security steps to take when setting up your own server. I only have two computers in my network, so there really isn't much point in reinstalling and making this computer an official server. I have Windows XP Professional installed on the computer that I have.

I have all of my developer applications on my Windows Professional computer, with server stuff... On the other computer I have games and the net of course... I was wanting to set up my own server also because of the experience of doing it. After installing XAMPP and Appserv, I don't really know what programs you need for a webserver\email\ftp server. I believe I got the ftp server down and I don't think email will be too hard to setup, but I need a domain name for that.

The only big issues though is being able to dig into APache, MySQL and try to figure out what their for and how to use them. Of course security also... I was also looking at getting a program to tell me how stable my internet connection is. I have noticed a lot of little downtime areas every once in a while and was wondering if I could check that out. Other than that, thoguh there is tons of more stuff to find out and so little time.
