I have Windows XP Pro Sp2, a little bit ago my computer all of the sudden just stopped downloading most things, a couple have been downloaded, but not much, I can't download my anti-virus update, nor hardly anything else, so it's NOT my browser! Nothing works with Firefox either! Anyways, so it's my OS.
Please note that my anti-virus (AVG free 8) finds no viruses, just spyware, and that is because the anti spyware is out of date. Also, a little while ago I used a program to chage the logon screen, it compltly messed it up! now it takes like 20 min just to get to the logon screen and another 5 to 10 just to load everythig! Any help would be appreciated, I'm pretty good with computers, so you can give me technicle stuff to try, and most simple stuff I've tried, but if you want, check to see if I've doen it. System Restore isn't a possibility because it was turned off, and then didn't have enough room to recored the data (has been changed) Thanks in advance! |

Hello,
Lets try repairing the winsock. We will address the other issues after we repair this. If you have XP-SP2 or Vista, you should use the built-in repair for the WINSOCK and TCP/IP stack. If you have XP-SP1 or earlier (and any previous version of Windows), you should use the Automated WINSOCK Fix all Windows Versions. I've included all the resets here. TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reboot the machine. TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista. Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log Reboot the machine.

Run the System File Checker
Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in: sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow) This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP CD.

So sorry for the delay I didnt get an alert that you replied back.
Perform a Repair Installation Before you perform a repair installation of Windows XP, you must uninstall Internet Explorer 7. If you do not uninstall Internet Explorer 7 in this situation, Internet Explorer will no longer work after the repair installation is completed. Specifically, the repair installation does not restore earlier versions of the files in the Program Files\Internet Explorer folder. Therefore, the Internet Explorer 7 files will be incompatible with the Internet Explorer 6 files that are installed in the Windows\System32 folder. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964
