I think I know what your saying. Almost like for every reaction there was an action. Well the thing with personal computers is that there can be soo mant actions to choose from that could bring up a reaction and its to find the one thing thats the challenge.

Received a new Retail XP Pro CD and it will not run scan disk either. I did check event viewer though and there are over 50 files that are corrupted. I may try the repair feature now that I have a CD. Any tips? Can I do the repair using the new disk even though I have oem install? TIA

Spent the afternoon on my computer problem here is what I found.
Decided to try sfc scannow one more time. Found the article on it on XP Repair. Did all of the registry hacks and took the I386 file from the retail CD and lo and behold scannow ran. Unfortunately my euphoria was short lived. When I checked Event Viewer I saw that even though I was not prompted for the CD the files were not repaired either. One entry said file XXX was repaired but the next entry said that the same file was unable to be restored. I eventually did a repair install and so far so good. I wish I could get scannow to work. It is a much simpler process as the repair install took 5 hours (between the install and some minor system tweaking to get to where I was). It would be nice to find someone who did a scannow and then checked Event Viewer to see if in fact the files were fixed. Thank you for your help.

All that work and the problem persisits. I was away from the computer and the screensaver was on came back a few seconds later and it had switched to the background. To be honest it is not a screensaver problem per se what it is is a problem of window focus. Various windows are open. I leave the computer on open window one. The screensaver comes on and if the focus shifts from one open to another then the screensaver runs in the background. My crutch has been to run no screensaver. But I have noticed that if I leave it on aol I'll come back and it will have switched focus to my.yahoo. It always switches to the 6th window open in my case my.yahoo. Something is happening on that 6th window because even if I leave it there it will change to the foreground. Got me baffled

aside from a total backup and reformat the only other thing I can think of would be to do what i do with my laptop. Set it to shut off the monitorafter a few minutes and have it wake on mouse movement.

Right now I am just going without a screensaver. I would think though with a windows repair that I could eliminate that and figure it is a software incompatibility issue.

I can speak from experience there that a repair does not always cure the systems ills. I have had that happen here before in my shop.

Your telling me. I've got the same problems after the repair. Plus some new ones. I'm thinking of doing a full format and reload. A lot of work but i am do not know what else to do to get a 100% system. Tired of crutches. I also want a dual boot with Win 98 as i have one info disk that only works with it and I miss it. OK questions:

What is the easiest way to do the format and load Win XP Pro?
Also Dual Boot 98 how?
Does an image of the system restore back the same problems that you have?

To dual boot, you will need to first partition the hard driv into atleast two partitions. I use partition magic faithfully. Then after the partitions are mode, you would install 98 first and get that all running.

Then commence with the xp install and during the install when it asks where you want to install, you select the second partition.

That will produce a dual boot option when you restart the system..

As far as backing up, I would jus get a blank cd and burn any important documents then reinstall cleanly.
