Help! How to connect two computers to the internet

Hi Guys,

Can you help me out, here goes hope you will understand what Iam trying to do:-
1, connect two computers with one dsl modem to the internet .

Both computers have a built in lan card ( I think thats whats its called) when I connect the computers on there own I can connect to the internet.

But what I would like to do is have them both connected at the same time and if possible that either one will still connect if the other one is switched off.

Now I have several pieces of hard ware which I was told in the PC shop that would enable me to do this:-

Acer WLAN 11g Turbo Broadband Router

several Ethernet (straight through) cable

although I tried to get this working I had no joy what so ever.

the other hardware I tried was a Fast Ethernet Switch N-Way 5 Port
10/100MBIT DeskTop 5 RJ-45

But again no luck it would only connect 1 computer.

Now Iam told that I should buy a usb2 Data link cable.

my main problem is trying to connect the things in the right order I think so if you have any solutions for me then a small diagram would be helpfull.

High Shelley. I assume you have the ethernet cable from the modem going to the lan port on the router. Is that correct ?

Just to note as well that your router may have that port labeled WAN..If so then run the enet cable from the modem to the routers wan port. Connect each pc to the 1 and 2 ports. Then reboot the modem and unplug the router. Now after the modem is back online for a few seconds, bring the router back online. Then look and theindicator lights for each port on the router. Are the lan, 1 & 2 lights on ?

ok yes they are connected like you said but still no nothing happening

have 3 green lights 1 wan & 2 ports

So, keeping it that way, do any connect to the web with that setup ?

yes just my main one

And now for a test. On the router reverse the port 1 and 2 cables and see if the same compouter that gets connected is still connected or if the other one gets a connection.

the other one gets the connection but only when I use the other comp to call up the internet

but the answer to your question is really No.
