Explorer keeps restarting

This is a for a friends laptop and the first time Ive tried to fix something in Vista.
But what happens is that Vista seems to load everything right But then it says that explorer cannot start and it keep tryng to restart. Going onto Vistas site I find the problem which states that you have to check to see if you have a certain program and the update it. This is done in the cmd promt but when I do this it says that the drive C has no volume name so I cannot access the drive to see if it has the program and to update it. I hope Ive explained this well enough to get help.
