HOSED!! Similar situation to Guapo's PLLZZ HELP!

Found this site by googling some of the keywords of the issue and read all 9 pages of posts of the Mobo/Guapo issues... Good reading by the way I had to find out how the story ended. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img] Congratulations to Guapo. My problem is similar so I'd be extremely grateful to anyone who can offer any advice.

Friend brought a computer to me that was so virused up he couldn't get the start button to work or any files to actually open. You could see them, but if you clicked on them they would come up in explorer with a weird page that said some jargon. Could open things only using weird methods in safe mode and everything looked extremely corrupted anyways (my friend likes to delete registry files when things aren't working the way they should be - enough said). Formatted the sucker, and now the cd-rom doesn't want to work at all.

This is a Dell Latitude CPi D266XT -- We have a WINDOWS ME install & boot disk (also have 95) and neither are working. The drive is modular and switches out to become a diskette drive which IS working. The CD drive is recognized and the disk turns inside and it tries to work but when it tries to run it says there are no bootable devices when the CD ROM drive is in there. It was working prior to the format and the disk works in other machines. So my guess is the drivers aren't loaded, or something to that effect.

I tried a couple of the suggestions from those posts, I've downloaded the correct disk for installing those drivers MOBO spoke of only with my computer instead of Guapo's - and when I go to run SETUP from an A: prompt it says "Bad command or file name" I also cannot do a format c: /s - it states that Windows no longer supports the format /s command and tells me to use the control panel (which I no longer have) -- Not sure where to go at this point -- The only other thing that could be a factor although I sorely doubt it is that the sticker on the computer says "Designed for Windows NT & 98" and I'm using an ME and 95 disk. Any ideas? Mobo?? Anyone? Anyone?

Also can you see any name on the cdrom like adaptec, samsung or toshiba ?

Yeah I figured Mother's Day I wouldn't get a reply so no worries - there's no rush here also I'm at work and will be leaving in a couple of hours so I'll check this tonight if you don't respond.

It's a removable drive and the name on the bottom of it is just DELL Latitude cp CD-ROM module -- I tried searching that in the dell downloads but it didn't have anything, the closest I got which is what I ended up downloading and trying was the DSSA01.exe which is supposed to work for removable storage on the Latitude CS

Oh and yes, no OS right now, but the ME boot disk installed a few things just to get me to a prompt window.

Well not knowing which one leaves us with two options right now so you may have to try em one at a time.

Make sure to insert the formatted flopppy in your drive then execute the downloaded file to begin making the floppy.

Then insert it in the drive, upon bootup make cetrtain the bios is set to boot first from the A drive. Then after rebooting with the new floppy in the drive, the system should get to the A:. prompt. Type setup and see where you get ..
