Reinstalling Windows

Hey Mobo, I told you about my brother's computer before the board crashed last week and now that post is gone. But he was running windows 98 and was getting the error message "error loading explorer.exe you must reinstall windows" and "the c:\windows\system\shlwapl.dll file appears to be corrupt. Reinstall the file and try again". He doesn't want win 98 on his computer anymore and now he has win xp. What do we have to do to get him operational again??

Please make sure the system meets XP's requirements, would be a shame to start and find out it wont run.

The system meets xp requirments, but we tried running the win 98 startup disk from the link that mobo gave me last week and it didn't work. I can't run the program in dos mode and the computer wouldn't boot from the disk after I changed the settings in the setup menu. I can't run any programs on the desktop so I was wondering what to try next??

Set the bios to boot from the cdrom first, insert the xp cdrom and reboot. Watch for the following as the pc starts to boot.
"to boot from cd press any key" At this time click enter.

Oh yeah I tried that Sat. before I previously posted the last time and his bios only had two floopy disk drives, not his cdrom drive so I couldn't set it to boot from cd rom. I didn't understand why that was b/c I was certain that would work.
